Mértola is one of the largest municipalities of Portugal with a surface of 1279.40 km2 that is divided into seven parishes.

The Municipality of Mértola is a local authority with the purpose to use his power to meet the needs of the local community. The Municipality of Mértola is responsible for the socio-economic development, regional planning, public supply, sanitation, health, education, culture, environment and sport. Local authorities have their own staff, own assets and finances, as well as their own management.

Mértola is a very pretty town that is traversed by Guadiana River, the largest river in the South. The town rich in heritage and offers a variety of different sectors such as hunting, tourism, gastronomy and unique landscapes.
